NFC and eKYC Integrations
Custom React wrappers around native NFC bridges and a resilient scan state machine that lifted Japan JPKI pass rates by 15 points and Android by 14.

The problem
Compliance meant integrating hardware verification, such as reading the NFC chip in a passport, through several vendors on a very wide range of phones and networks. Pass rates were poor: about 25% for Japan's JPKI and 22% on Android. A browser cannot talk to an NFC chip, so everything went through native app bridges.
The approach
- Custom React wrappers over the native bridges, instead of the vendors' stock screens. The stock screens were rigid and failed silently when someone shifted their passport; ours added visual alignment guides, haptic cues, error recovery loops and our own branding.
- Explicit asynchronous state machines (scanning, reading the chip, verifying) with automatic retries when the NFC connection drops.
The result
- Japan JPKI pass rate: 25% to 40% (+15 percentage points).
- Android pass rate through the NFC integration: 22% to 36% (+14 points).
- After rolling out Persona NFC: +5.52 points of overall 7-day KYC conversion across 15+ countries.
